About Us

Our School At A Glance

At Merritt Central, we focus on supporting kids in all areas of their development, academically, socially, and emotionally. We’re proud to use Behaviour Education and Self-Management (BESM), a school-wide approach that helps students learn how to make thoughtful choices and take responsibility for their actions.

We are committed to creating an inclusive, anti-racist, and respectful learning environment that values the diversity and cultures of all students. We embrace nłeʔkepmx, Syilx, and Métis cultures and languages, and uphold the rights of all learners as expressed in the BC Human Rights Code of Conduct.

Our goal is to help children grow into kind, respectful individuals who understand themselves, care about others, and appreciate the world around them. We do this by creating a safe, welcoming environment where students learn important life skills like self-control, empathy, and reflection.

We also use the 7 Grandfather Teachings, Respect, Courage, Truth, Love, Wisdom, Honesty, and Humility, to guide regular conversations with students about character and values. These teachings help us build a strong, caring school community where every child can thrive.

Our Mission:

At Merritt Central Elementary School, we believe every child has the right to learn in a safe, caring, and balanced environment. Our mission is to support the well-being of all students, helping them develop a deep appreciation for themselves, others, and the world around them. We value diversity and foster a culture of respect and curiosity. By learning from our shared experiences, we encourage personal growth and inspire a lifelong love of learning.

At MCES, we believe that all children have the right to learn in a safe, caring, and balanced environment. This is accomplished when all members of the school community show respect and appreciation for themselves, others, and the world around them.

Expectations of Students:

The rules for behavior apply to all students all the time. This means they need to follow the rules at school, during school activities, when they’re traveling to or from school, and even when they’re online.
