School District 58’s Grade 7 Camping Trip

We are contacting you to let you know of plans that we have for this year’s Grade 7s in Merritt. All of our elementary schools in Merritt are participating in a field trip to Eagle Bay Camp in Sorrento, BC for 3 days and two nights (June 10-12). While we are there, we have arranged to participate in a number of outdoor activities including archery, swimming, kayaking, a climbing tower and other great camp activities. We would like to invite all grade 7 parents to an Eagle Bay Online Information meeting Thur. Nov 6, 2025 from 6-6:30 (A zoom link will be created and sent out closer to the meeting date).

The meeting will help parents understand the events, procedures around medication, including pain relievers such as aspirin and Tylenol, supervisors, criminal record checks, fees and expectations.

The cost of the trip will be $300 per student. This includes the chartered bus, cabin and camp rentals, meals and activities; as well as covering the costs for the volunteer supervisors that will be accompanying us ($155 per adult).

In the past we have had a PAC that was able to supplement this cost through fundraising initiatives.  In fact, last year’s PAC covered the entire cost.  However, this year we do not have parents who have committed to our PAC and we have no fundraising initiative available to support the cost. Grade seven families will either need to come together to form a fundraising committee, or the cost will be the responsibility of families.

We understand that $300 can be a challenge in one large sum so we would like to propose a payment plan for families where we collect $45 a month from November until April and $30 in May. That will allow each family to save up $300 to put towards the trip costs.

What we need to know from you is if your child will participate and if you would be willing to come as a supervisor.  We will need 7 parent supervisors to commit now. This may be reduced depending on the number of students who actually wish to attend, but in order to move forward

we will need 7 parents/guardians to commit and complete their criminal record checks by February  2026 (these can sometimes come in in a few weeks and at other times may take months, so we need this done ASAP).

Please fill out the forms below and return them to Merritt Central Elementary School by Tuesday, November 4, 2025.

If you need some help with the cost of this trip, you can contact me and we can confidentially arrange for the needed supports.
